Boredom Volume 1

Acrylics and markers on two canvases

Boredom is an aspect of life that we face every day, multiple times a day. There are many ways of which I explored the concept of boredom. Every artwork/volume depicts a different characteristic of being in the mindset of boredom. The link to all of them is canvas and its particles.

Zentagles, scribbles, doodles are key symbols to my personal boredom.

Boredom Volume 2

Acrylics on canvas

Sometimes, when bored the movement the human body chooses to do is similar to a fall, either forwards or backwards.

Boredom Volume 5

Acrylics on canvas

Using an old paintings as the base canvas are the symbolism for all the notebooks, tests, photocopies, textbooks etc that I have drawn on the years that I have been in school. Using the same technique I used in “Boredom Volume 3” I waited till I was actually bored in order to paint, to have the raw result. I painted on the canvas as I would with a pen on my otebook in a boring class

Embodiment of the human body can be translated both literally and metaphorically. Everyone in their life needed to adjust in a new environment, situation, or change. The human body forms easily in different positions. These forms can be fascinating to watch, when nerves go along the motion they provide the body with a different expression or movement that embodies to chairs, stairs or a cabinet. After the body disappears by the furniture the hands or legs that remain take their previous or new form in the embodiment the same way humans add us in a new “body”. The change of the material of the furniture or the furniture itself gives the symbolism of different situations we need to adjust to, even if they are easy (soft) or hard (wood). The contrast the flash camera creates to the background in correlation to the different hues of color of the skin make the color of the body the focal point in contrast with the wood or pattern of the item in each picture.

The struggle with medication led me into wanting to see them in more depth. A portable microscope gave me access into seeing my then “enemy” closer than ever and capturing photos and zooming even more. That activity demystified the enemy and made me realize the simplicity of the action and each pill.

The dehumanization of war

Wood and black and green ink

This artwork aimed to express the felling of suppression and suffocation. I did some research on the images of items that expressed those emotions, like a spider wed, and thus I created this artwork mostly by using lines., while the reason I used a skull is because all people have skull, but what makes us different are our facial characteristics, so this way I aimed to present equality and sameness.

Sandbox

Digital art

Sandbox, as well as Antigone, are part of a series that aims to show my daily life through quarantine, thus they aim to show boredom and routine. Due to lack of material, I started experimenting with digital art. I decided to focus on me studying for this artwork, since this is the activity that I do most of the day.

Antigone

Digital art

Sandbox and Antigone, are part of a series that aims to show my daily life through quarantine, thus they aim to show boredom and routine. For this artwork, I decided to focus on me trying to find something to eat, just because I am bored in my room and I went to the kitchen mostly to take a break from my studies. Through this artwork, I wanted to show how aimless and unmotivated my daily life has been the past months.

The caged roses

Digital Collage

Working, average people stuck in their normal routine, purposefully they are all predisposed they sometimes forget what it’s like to be free and careless. They are robots lost in the big world. Today, the all carry pain and hardship. They all complain, sometimes forgetting to breath, and take a step back and appreciate their life and its beauty, the hidden roses.

Seeing though the invisible

Felt tip pen

Taking a closer look into my life and my normality. For my home to my school and my neighborhood. It all flips around as I feel alone in an empty space. Suddenly what I have known along fades into a memory.

Ghost cities

Felt tip pen

Taken after photographs of normally tourist locations. Now we see them as empty cities, too similar to the dessert. They are hidden behind a horrific curtain waiting to resurface.

Trapped in silence

nail polish, black pen and posca

Our living conditions have changed dramatically since the pandemic. The measures that have been imposed, such as the restriction of our mobility on an individual and collective level and the strict confinement have greatly affected our mental health. Staying at home unable to meet family and friends constantly affects people’s psychology a lot, as a result to feel trapped. Staying at home for a long time I sometimes felt that I could not breathe. As my house has a lot of furniture, I wanted to throw it all away. Many times I felt trapped by the furniture and this is what I want to show through my work. In this work I have depicted myself sitting in two parts surrounded by many furniture. I used nail polish, black pen and posca to do this work.

I can’t move

Photography

I wanted to show the complexity that makes us feel trapped in our minds. The dark lines symbolize the complexity and the difficulties that we encounter in our lives. The following faces are me but mutants do not look close to my real face. Inspired by Bacon, I did this as I wanted to show that many times the negative thoughts and anxiety change us and make us a different person.

Living in a chaos

Collage

Due to the pandemic, we were trapped at home for a long period of time. In my following artwork I wanted to show the desire to go out but we are trapped at home. Inspired by the paintings of Edward Hooper, I did a collage with the photos of my sister and with the photos I took in Athens. The work expresses my personal desire since I used to visit the city of Athens very often before the pandemic.
