Project “Kinaros” – CGS IB PYP Pupils converse with the only resident of the island of Kinaros

An exceptionally interesting project inspired by Margarita Pournara’s article “The Tireless Guardian of the Aegean” (https://www.kathimerini.gr/society/561131014/i-akoyrasti-froyros-toy-aigaioy/) in the Greek newspaper Kathimerini inspires CGS IB PYP pupils to be active and cultivate life skills and attitudes.

The “Lady of Kinaros”, or otherwise known as the “Tireless Guardian of the Aegean”, is Mrs. Irini (Rini) Katsotourhi, the only resident of Kinaros for the last seven years. The CGS Primary School has created the “Project Kinaros”, a year-long project aimed at all years of the Primary School. At a different time, each year works on the specific project by connecting it either with the festive atmosphere of Christmas or with the Unit of Inquiry of each year.

The IB PYP programme connects school experiences with reality and emphasizes the concepts of international-mindedness and the development of responsible citizens. Our goal through this project is for students to become responsible citizens and to develop lifelong attitudes, such as respect and empathy, to cultivate not only skills, but also the IB Learner profile.

During the project, the students will become acquainted with and process the biography of Irini Katsotourhi, her life and daily routine, the difficulties she faces, the short history and the geographical location of the island, the work of the All for Blue organization, but also the journalists’ visit and the communication they had with her.
