Basketball

As an official Olympic sport, basketball in Greece comes under the Hellenic Basketball Federation. In Greece, the federation is responsible for designing the development of the sport, including Pan-Hellenic youth competitions as well as its own developmental programme, creating regional teams for all Associations, with children aged 11-12 and 12-16 years old.

The official Pan-Hellenic youth competitions are exactly the same as those that exist under FIBA. Mini basketball is conducted under the aegis of the Associations and Local Committees (U16 Junior Boys-Girls, U18 Senior Boys-Girls Championships).

The educational value of basketball is undoubtedly of the utmost importance, because, in addition to promoting the physical condition of children, it contributes to the fostering of sociability, team spirit and self-confidence, combining sport with play. According to scientific research, the ideal age for a person’s neuromuscular, physical, mental and social development is childhood (6-15 years old). During this time, a child develops motor skills which he will utilise throughout his life. This is because, during this age, there are no major organic lesions present in the development of his neuromuscular system.
