After reading the opinion piece, “It’s Like a War Out There: Iran’s Women Haven’t Been This Angry in a Generation,” by Azadeh Moaveni, CGS student Thaleia Kostakou (Class of 2024) wrote an insightful letter to the New York Times that was subsequently published.
Writing her letter, “Iranian Women Are Launching a Revolution” was part of the English B class where students were asked to read an article of their choosing from any English-language publication. They had to then respond by writing for an authentic audience – in this case, a real letter to the editor. Assignments like these are important because they encourage students to take their learning beyond the classroom and put their language skills to use in a real-world setting.
Thaleia’s perfectly expressed comments on how the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody “should serve as a wake-up call to every country and every woman” reflect her excellent writing abilities but also an awareness of the impact of current world events.
